The Second Millennium (1001 - 2000AD)
11th Century (1001 - 1100)
1001: January 1 starts the Second Millennium.
1039: The camera obscura, meaning "dark chamber," forerunner of the photographic camera, is a darkened room with a single small opening. It is used to view eclipses.
1050: The Chinese print books using movable type.
1054: A "guest star" is seen by the Chinese. The supernova explosion is witnessed in the area of Earth's sky known as the constellation Taurus where in the Third Millennium there will be an expanding gas cloud called Crab Nebula.
1066: A comet appears. It will be known 700 years later as Halley's Comet.
1080: The appearance of Halley's Comet is depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry. which depicts the Norman victory at the Battle of Hastings in East Sussex, England, in 1066.
1000s: As a result of Islam, nomadic Arabs continue to be torch-bearers of science and learning. Persians, who had created a great civilization before the rise of Islam, produce much more science and learning in the Islamic period than before.
