Books
There have been hundreds of fiction and non-fiction books written about the Red Planet. To mention only a few:Fiction:
- In 1897 in The War of the Worlds, H.G. Wells wrote about technologically superior Martians trying to conquer Earth. The book was adapted for film in 1953 and again in a version directed by Steven Spielberg in 2005.
- In 1912 in A Princess of Mars, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote in his first book a science fiction romance adventure about a Civil War veteran who found himself transplanted suddenly to Mars. The book was followed by ten other otherworldly adventures.
- In 1946 in The Martian Chronicles, Ray Bradbury delivered a collection of 19 short stories from the point of view of Martians. To them, humans from Earth were the aliens from Outer Space.
- In 1961 in Stranger in a Strange Land, Robert Heinlein told the story of Valentine Michael Smith trying to adjust to life on Earth after being raised as a Martian.
- In the 1990s in his Mars colonization trilogy of novels, Red Mars (1992), Green Mars (1993), and Blue Mars (1996), Kim Stanley Robinson describes the first settlement on Mars by scientists and engineers who establish a community where social economics satisfy human needs, diversity flourishes, and everyone fulfills their potential, free from the struggles of race, class and gender. The title colors refer to changes on Mars during the trilogy.
