An acronym is a word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as AU for Astronomical Unit, CNES for Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, or GPS for Global Positioning System, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words, such as radar for radio detecting and ranging. The use of acronyms is popular in space science and astronomy.
